Description
FABERGE - RUSSIAN SILVER, ROSEWOOD STAMP BOX
Antique Russian Faberge Silver-Mounted Rosewood Stamp Box. Nice Faberge item. When you touch and hold a piece of FABERGE sterling you are in contact with something very special coming down to you not only from the era of the czars but of an ancestry far more ancient: for it is typical of all the imperial courts there have ever been.
HALLMARKS: '84' silver standard and 'K. FABERGE' in Cyrillic. Attributed to the workmaster Karl Gustaf Hjalmar (1873-1959) a Swedish/Finnish workmaster, producing enameled objects for Faberge until 1916. Assay of Ivan Lebedkin on interior lid rim, additional assay mark of Ivan Lebedkin on exterior of lid rim at front of box. There is also number '18201' scrawled on the item. Some of the Faberge items were marked with numbers (This method was used for internal works in Faberge shops - different artists worked on different parts of the same item, they marked each part with an item number so they know which item it belongs to).

HISTORY: Peter Charles Faberge was born in Russia, in St.-Petersburg on May, 30th, 1846. His father Gustav, of Huguenot extraction, was an unassuming jeweller who had been independently active since 1841. In 1860, Carl Faberge accompanied his parents on their move to Dresden. From there his father sent him on a tour of Europe, with stops in Frankfurt, Florence, and Paris. Back in St. Petersburg by 1866 as a full-fledged master, Carl joined Hiskias Pendin, August Holmstrom, and Wilhelm Reimer, all of whom had been employed by his father. In 1868 a Finnish goldsmith, Erik Kollin, was attached to the firm. Four years later Carl Faberge took over his father's workshop, with Kollin as his first head workmaster.
