Item Details
Description
'Photograph of a Non-binary Person.' Hand-tinted gelatin silver print mounted on card stock. 6" x 4".

This rare and unusual photograph is a remarkable document of early 20th-century gender expression. It depicts a non-binary person circa 1930s who is transitioning from male to female.

This photograph appears to be of the period; it is also reminiscent of the work of: Claude Cahun (Marcel Moore); Pierre Molinier (John O'Reilly and James Tellin); and the images of queer people documented by Magnus Hirschfeld.

Provenance: The collector-consignor acquired this photograph with a collection of other LGBTQ+ photographs 30 years ago at a New England flea market.
