Description
(1762 - 1800) French military leader, originally a brigade commander who led a Republican French division in many important battles during the French Revolutionary Wars. He became commander-in-chief of the Army of Rome in 1798 and of the Army of Italy in 1799. Partial A.L.S. ‘Championnet’, 1p. legal folio, [n.p., n.d. but ca. 1794), in French in part: ‘…If my efforts to punish the scoundrels who traffic in the blood of the defenders of the Republic prove unsuccessful, and if they find a way to escape the vengeance of the Law, I owe it to the army [and] to the Fathers and Mothers of [French] soldiers to denounce them to the entire Republic, and make known to the assassins everything will be done to punish them…’. Together with an A.L.S. ‘Ducros’ 2pp. legal folio, Strasbourg, ’19 Fructidor an 9’ [Sept. 5, 1799), to an unknown correspondent regarding the death of Barthelemy Catherine Joubert and sending praise about Championnet.
