Description
A barn find from St. Vith in 1987 (and so marked), made by a Dutch collector and 'digger' in the1980s, a German M42 helmet converted for peacetime use into a scoop to which was once attached a wooden pole, probably for handling water, food, or waste. The pole attachment was welded to the helmet, and has since torn the metal a bit. Evenly rusted. St. Vith was the scene of very heavy fighting on the first few days of the German attack during the Battle of the Bulge. This helmet and other pieces from the collector's holdings have toured Europe for decades. With a copy of a flyer used by the collector to advertise a show of his relics in 1981, and they toured again in 1987.
