Napoleon III pedestal. France, second half of the 19th century.
Green onyx, bronze and cloisonnÃ© enamel.
With marks of use.
Measurements: 79 x 46,5 x 48 cm.
This elaborate Napoleon III pedestal combines the veining of the green onyx with the delicacy of the cloisonnÃ© enamel. The combination of these apparently disparate elements is nevertheless effective on an expressive level, and manages to maintain classical rigour while leaving room for the ornamental fantasy so much to the taste of the bourgeois clientele of the second half of the 19th century. The pedestal is raised on claw feet supporting the green onyx base. Four columns form the shaft and are decorated with enamel inlays in various colours, creating intricate vegetalised forms of great aesthetic interest. The top of the pedestal, also made of green onyx, has an outer profile decorated with a band of cloisonnÃ© enamel and foliate elements in its centre.
