East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of Satsuma ware vases, white porcelain overpainted with vibrant pigments! The scenes are figural, scholars or elite men in robes - one holds a sword of long knife in one scene- conversing and/or walking amongst flowering trees or on a terrace. The painting is thick, and textured - with scrolling spirals, diamonds, and stippled patterns throughout. Satsuma ware vessels originated in the Satsuma region of Japan around the 16th century CE and were popular export wares to European customers that desired brightly decorated pieces with the characteristic raised painted and gold moriage decorations. One it fully intact, the other has a hairline fissure on the interior which does not affect presentation. Bright pigments with a few losses to pigment, but overall great condition.
