East Asia, Japan, later Meiji Period, ca. 1883 to 1945 CE. A kyu-gunto, also known as a Russo-Japanese sword, used by Japanese officers in the Army, Navy, and Cavalry for over fifty years. This example is from an Army officer, distinguished by its backstrap and side piece with chrysanthemum emblems. These swords had a wide range of customizations, and this example features a fine, machine-made steel blade and a lacquered wood handle enhanced by brass bands. The steel scabbard would have once been wrapped in leather. A fine example of an Imperial Japanese weapon. Size w/ sheath: 35.5" L (90.2 cm)
