John Hanway was an 18th-century British traveler and merchant best known for his voyages to Russia and Persia. This voyage, which took Hanway also to Germany and Holland, allowed him to see the customs of Persian living as well as make observations toward British trade on the Caspian Sea, which happened to become the title of his voyage memoirs.
