Condition: good.; Until 1898 Spain maintained three large and valuable colonies: Cuba and Puerto Rico in the Caribbean and the Philippine archipelago in the Pacific. The total number of islands in the latter exceeded 3,000. Its control was very complex for the Spanish government, since piracy exercised total hegemony in those waters and its eradication entailed serious difficulties. Spain was forced to dedicate almost all of its precarious navy, small gunboats and light cruisers to combat it.
On April 25, 1898 the United States declared war on Spain following the sinking of the Battleship Maine in Havana harbor on February 15, 1898. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898. As a result Spain lost its control over the remains of its overseas empire -- Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines Islands, Guam, and other islands.
