For your consideration is this 1930-40s J. Chein & Company tin wind up Native American toy. Julius Chein established J. Chein & Co., an American toy business, in 1903. The business was situated in Burlington, New Jersey, and it produced toys with lithographs on tin. Toys made by J. Chein & Co. were renowned for their vivid colors and intricate designs, and they were especially well-liked in the 1920s and 1930s. Toy banks, toy vehicles, and wind-up mechanical toys were some of the most well-liked products produced by the company. The Strathmore Corporation bought J. Chein & Co. in the 1960s, and Chein toys were made there until the 1980s. The toy shows brightly colored lithographed tin with colors of red, blue, white, yellow, beige, green and black. The lithographed image shows a Native American holding a knife and an axe while wearing a feathered headdress and feathered pants. The pants and shirt are red with a yellow vest and black bow tie. On the back of the toy is a fixed key, when wound the toy vibrates and moves around the table. The toy shows good condition with wear from its vintage age showing faded areas and slight chips in color, but is still in working order. The toy measures 2" L x 2" W x 5" H.
