For your consideration is "The Rough Riders" by Theodore Roosevelt, Uniform Edition 1919, copyright 1899, Charles Scribner's Son's. The Rough Riders was a nickname given to the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, one of three such regiments raised in 1898 for the Spanish-American War and the only one to see combat. The U.S. had gone to war in opposition to Spanish colonial policies in Cuba, which was then torn by a rebellion, but the United States Army was small, understaffed, and disorganized in comparison to its status during the American Civil War roughly 30 years prior. When its first commander, Colonel Leonard Wood, was promoted, Roosevelt became commander and the regiment would forever known as "Roosevelt's Rough Riders". Despite the brevity of their service, the Rough Riders became legendary, thanks in large part to Roosevelt's writing his own history of the regiment and the silent film reenactments made years later. As Vice President in 1901, Roosevelt would ascend to the presidency after the assassination of President William McKinley. This green clothbound stamped and gold gilt lettering spine hardcover is in very fine overall condition, very slight scuffing to cover edges, intact deckled pages exhibit age tanning, no other obvious marring noted. Original paper jacket exhibits tattering. Book measures 5.75"W xz 8.25"L x 1.25"D approximately.
