Description
NAN GOLDIN, “My Mother Doing Tai Chi, Swampscott Mass 1997.” 23x 16 inch chromogenic print. The title is written in marker, along with Goldin’s signature and “AP-1." This may be a unique print. The writing is covered by the mat. In connection with the recent film biography by Laura Poitras, All the Beauty and Bloodshed, there is renewed interest in the artist’s life and work. The subject is not typical of the earlier photographs by which Goldin is most known, but it is very important for the artist’s work. Her mother was 80 years old when the portrait was made. She wanted to be presented in an active even playfully aggressive manner, and the artist wanted her to be seen like that. There is a scene in the film where she is shown dancing, at around the same time as this portrait. Her mother obviously had a powerful role in Goldin’s life. The other woman in her early life was her older sister who took her own life. This comes from the collection of her brother. The clothing and other details have a bright painterly quality. This is a beautiful photograph as well as a moving one. It is currently in a frame.
