In fact, Sports Illustrated magazine named their first matchup, the Liston–Clay fight, as the fourth greatest sports moment of the twentieth century. On February 25, 1964, in Miami Beach, Florida, Ali, the 8–1 underdog, managed to win in a major upset when Liston gave up at the beginning of the seventh round. Their second fight, on May 25, 1965 in Lewiston, Maine, ended with Ali winning via a first-round knockout. The infamous "phantom punch", as well as a botched countdown by the referee, aroused suspicions of a fix and have been subject to debate ever since.
