[WWI] Small Group Related to Harlem Hellfighters and Hamilton Fish III

A group of three items, a photograph, metal fob, and typed letter signed, related to the 369th Infantry aka the "Harlem Hellfighters." The photograph, measuring 9.25" x 4", N.p., n.d., is an original image of a group of armed men from the famed unit, totaling 29 in all. The black and white image shows the group arranged in three rows, in full uniform and several holding rifles. Accompanying the photo is a retained copy of a typed letter signed, 1p, measuring 6" x 7", Goshen, New York, dated May 30, 1975. Signed by sports writer John Bruen and addressed to Hamilton Fish III, who had served as a major in the 369th. Bruen asks about whether Fish could identify any of the men in the photograph, specifically Fish's personal aide, Roy Howard. The final item in the group is a cast bronze shied fob attached to a leather strap. Measuring 5.75" x 1.125" in total. The fob reads "369 INF. A.E.F." and has a '15 at the center behind a pair of crossed rifles. There is light soiling and toning to the typed letter, boldly signed. Wear and soiling to the photograph but the image is clear. Light wear and scratching to the bronze fob. Very fine overall.

Hamilton Fish III (1888-1991) was a New York politician and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1920-1945. Prior to the U.S. entering WWI, Fish was serving as a captain in the 15th NY Infantry, which was later re-designated as the 369th Infantry. This unit of African Americans became known as the "Harlem Hellfighters" and was placed under the control of the French Army upon reaching Europe. The 369th served 191 on the front lines, making it the longest service at the front of any American regiment. Fish received both the Silver Star and the French War Cross for his service, and he and his sister, Janet (who had served as a nurse) were inducted into the French Legion of Honor.
