Description
Authentic 3AM Ed. of April 15th, 1865 NY Herald "The President is still alive... his condition is utterly helpless"
The 3AM edition of the "New York Herald" following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. 8pp, measuring 16" x 23", New York, dated April 15, 1865. The 3AM edition, Whole No. 10456. The issue reports on the failing condition of the president, with new details coming in every hour. With additional reports on the movements of Grant and Sherman, Jefferson Davis's escape, and the evacuation of Richmond. An authentic example of a widely faked newspaper. With flattened folds, separated along the horizontal fold of the front page. Uncut top edge. Light toning and soiling throughout. Very good.
Highlighted headlines and reports include:
"Important. Assassination of President Lincoln. The President Shot at the Theater Last Evening. Secretary Seward Daggered in His Bed, But Not Mortally Wounded. Clarence and Frederick Seward Badly Hurt. Escape of the Assassins…J. Wilkes Booth, the Actor, the Alleged Assassin of the President"
"The Herald Despatches…2AM The President is still alive, but there is no improvement in his condition."
"The Press Despatches: 2:12AM The President is still alive, but he is growing weaker. The ball is lodged in his brain, three inches from where it entered the skull. He remains insensible, and his condition is utterly helpless."
