An Irish Ormolu-Mounted Officer's Presentation Sabre To Alderman James Vance By The 5th Company Of The 2nd Regiment, Royal Dublin InfantryBy John Asherainey Fecit, Dublin, Dated 1798With curved fullered blade (small areas of old rust patination) bright over half its length to the clipped-back point and etched over both sides with cabbalistic symbols, a sun-in-splendour, crescent moons and a star, the forte etched and gilt against a blued ground along one side with further cabbalistic symbols between small stars and moons, an Ottoman trophy of arms and a profile Turk's head, and along the other with similar decoration surmounted by a man-in-the-moon and stars, stirrup hilt comprising half-basket guard combining recurved side-bar swept round to form a double-scroll with spherical terminals centred on a crowned Irish harp (old repairs), side-ring engraved 'ON PARADE MARCH 18 1798' on the underside and enclosing an elaborate pierced and engraved 'GR' cypher, shield-shaped langets engraved respectively with the presentation inscription and 'God Save the KING', lobed rear quillon, knuckle-guard with bevelled edges and pierced for a sword-knot, lion-head pommel with plain back-piece, and ribbed ivory grip (old split on either side beneath the pommel) bound with a strand of twisted silver wire, in its original red morocco scabbard (some wear and old damage) with linear engraved ormolu mounts (gilding worn), the former tooled and gilt over each side with foliate line decoration, and beneath the locket with royal arms beneath demi suns-in-splendour surmounted by a crowned scroll inscribed 'PROSPERITY TO IRELAND', the locket engraved with maker's details on one side, two suspension rings, and retaining much of its original gilding 81 cm. bladeFootnotes:The presentation inscription reads: 'ON PARADE MARCH 1798 This sword was Presented by the Non-Commissioned Officers & Privates of the 5th Com of 2d Regt. Royal Dublin Infantry to Alderm n Jas Vance their Cap tn in testimony of the Affectionate Regard they have for him as a Loyal Soldier and much respected Fellow Citizen' James Vance was Lord Mayor of Dublin between 1805 and 1806.
