Ca. first half 20thC. Good with one missing figure on the back right rail. Hide seat top shows tears and some loss, underneath shows loose seams. Pegged construction, all original patina. Fine carved Chokwe chair, Angola. Purchased in 2005 from Tad Dale. Ex-Nooter coll.
These chairs are full of symbolism: female figures represent the importance of women in supporting a matrilineal society. Tiny figures on the rungs and stretchers enact narrative scenes of community life, a sign of the ruler's concern for his people's well-being. Someone may have been eaten by a lion according to the back rail. The front rail depicts a popular woman flanked by two male admirers.
