Description
A pair of 18th century folio Bibles related to America, including: ** THE HOLY BIBLE. Glasgow: Galbraith, 1765. 16.5" x 10.25". Rebound in modern morocco. Pastedowns renewed but with panel cut out to reveal the early owner's signature of Capt. Edward Randolph (1754-1837), "Patriot of 1776." With the bookplate and stamp of his grandson Richard Randolph Parry. Also with a note, dated 1864, laid in at front in the hand of Richard Randolph Parry who writes that this Bible belonged to Capt. Edward Randolph who gave it to his daughter, Julianna Randolph, who then gave it to her son, Richard. Capt. Randolph joined the Patriot cause as an ensign in the Fourth Pennsylvania Regiment but was quickly promoted to Captain. He participated in the battles of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth. Title, front blanks and table leaf at end with margins strengthened, foxing throughout, occasional water-staining, lacks at least the final leaf (a blank?), no NT title-leaf but register continuous, sold as-is. *** SOLD WITH *** THE HOLY BIBLE. Philadelphia: Thomas Dobson, 1799. 15.75" x 9.75". Modern morocco over cloth. Lacks all plates but two, both OT and NT titles present, index at rear, the whole with various stains, foxing and similar faults, as-is. Very rare in any state.
