Description
Al Capone was an American gangster who became notorious during the Prohibition era of the 1920s and 1930s. Born on January 17, 1899, in Brooklyn, New York, Capone began his criminal career as a member of a street gang before eventually rising to become the boss of the Chicago Outfit, a criminal organization that controlled the bootlegging, gambling, and prostitution rackets in the city.Capone's reign as a criminal kingpin was characterized by his use of violence and intimidation to control his operations, as well as his lavish lifestyle and public persona. He was often referred to as "Scarface" due to a scar on his cheek, which he claimed was the result of a World War I injury, although some sources suggest it may have been from a bar fight.Capone's criminal empire was brought down by the efforts of law enforcement officials, including Eliot Ness and his team of "Untouchables." In 1931, Capone was convicted of tax evasion and sentenced to 11 years in federal prison. He was released in 1939 due to his deteriorating health and spent the remainder of his life out of the public eye.Despite his notorious reputation, Capone has become something of a cultural icon, with numerous movies, television shows, and books based on his life and exploits. His story continues to fascinate people as an example of the rise and fall of a powerful criminal figure in American history.
