Description
Cy Twombly (1928-2011) was an American painter, sculptor, and photographer who was known for his large-scale, abstract works. He is considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century, and his work is associated with both the Abstract Expressionist and Neo-Expressionist movements. Twombly's paintings are characterized by their loose, gestural brushwork, bold use of color, and incorporation of text and language. He was particularly interested in the interaction between the written word and visual art, and many of his pieces feature scribbled words, phrases, and fragments of poetry. Twombly was born in Virginia and studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Art Students League in New York. He lived and worked in Italy for much of his life and was deeply influenced by classical mythology and European art history. Twombly's work has been exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world, and he is widely regarded as one of the most important artists of his generation. His legacy continues to inspire and influence artists working today.
