His iconic large-scale paintings and prints of looping, gestural marks were scribbled and smeared on raw canvas or linen, infusing his work with a unique level of frenetic energy that remains unmatched. Twombly s practice balanced his interest in Roman and Greek mythology with the childlike doodling of unsophisticated graffiti, blackboard chalk drawings, and bathroom tagging. My line is childlike but not childish," he once said. Born Edwin Parker Twombly Jr. on April 25, 1928 in Lexington, VA, he went on to attend the Art Students League of New York where he met Robert Rauschenberg, who recommended he enroll at the Black Mountain College. While there, Twombly studied with Franz Kline and Robert Motherwell and was introduced to the work of Paul Klee, whose playful approach would remain a lasting influence.
