Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist and political activist who was born into slavery in Maryland in the early 1820s. She escaped from slavery in 1849 and subsequently became a conductor on the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by African American slaves to escape to freedom in the North.Tubman made over 13 missions to rescue more than 70 enslaved people, including her own family members and friends, making her one of the most well-known "conductors" on the Underground Railroad. She became known as "Moses" to the people she helped lead to freedom, due to her incredible bravery and leadership.During the Civil War, Tubman worked as a nurse, cook, and spy for the Union Army. She was the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war, serving as a guide for the raid on the Combahee River in South Carolina, which liberated more than 700 enslaved people. After the war, Tubman was an advocate for women's suffrage and worked tirelessly for the rights of African Americans.Tubman is widely regarded as a hero and an icon of American history. She is remembered for her courage, determination, and selflessness in the fight against slavery and oppression. In 2020, it was announced that Tubman would become the new face of the $20 bill, becoming the first African American woman to appear on U.S. currency.
