Cindy Sherman is an American artist known for her photography and film work. Born in 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Sherman initially studied painting at the State University of New York at Buffalo. She began experimenting with photography in the late 1970s, creating a series of self-portraits in which she transformed her appearance through makeup, wigs, and costumes. Sherman's photographs often challenge conventional ideas of beauty, gender, and identity. She has created a range of characters, from clowns to fashion models to historical figures, and her work has been widely exhibited and collected by major museums around the world. In addition to her photography, Sherman has also directed and acted in films. She has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to contemporary art, including a MacArthur Fellowship in 1995 and a National Medal of Arts in 2019.
