Description
Very entertaining and colorful letter written by Paul, a young man in the military, to his wife or sweetheart, telling about what he calls "the most eventful day of my life." "A few of us received invitations from Wm R. Hurst (sic) to be his house guests at La Cuesta Encantada. It didnt hit me until I was almost there where we were going. Pixton said that's one time that the Lord had me by the hand and I took hold." He records what he sees in wonderful detail; the zebras, yaks, emus, bison, elk dear (sic,) antelope, Rocky mt. sheep, etc. that wandered in herds along the winding road that led to the castle; the tile Spanish style bungalow guest house with "gobs of lovely Ming vases and wood carvings in chests, beautiful tapastries and silver antiques." They meet the actress (and Hearst mistress) Marion Davies, who passed around Parliment cigarettes and arranged for them to have a swim, and later "50 cent cigars" and "beer, (light or dark.) It was imported from Munich. We were also served the best Scotch & sodas I have ever had" at lunch, "Marion and her sister served the meat (all kinds of pickles) I have never seen so many kinds of cheese in myu life and they just kept bringing in Hiballs, candy, cigars, and ask for what you want and they had it too. We couldnt' stump 'em! While we were eating Mr. Hurst received two direct wires about the Bremen. jHe took it kind of hard." (Possibly the S. S. Bremen?) After lunch Marian and her sister take the men to the private theater for a screening of Marian's film, "Operator # 13".Of which he writes; "I didnt see it all, as I spent about half of the time lighting Marian's cigarette. Two puffs and they are gond down the ash stand and in about a minute she wants another. Terrible waste." He remarks, on saying good night to Davies and her sister at the castle, "I believe they get a little lonely up there." Full of personality and details, the letter covers five sides of three sheets of paper.
