Oscar Hunt Van Gottschalck American Tonalist Artist Oil Painting Salmagundi Club Exhibition Signed. Oil on Canvas by Oscar Hunt Van Gottschalck; exhibited at Salmagundy Club; exhibition label on back; entitled "Quiet Waters"; 21 x 28; 26 x 32 1/2 framed.
Oscar von Gottschalk opened his own studio in New York and depended on book illustrating for his livelihood while he continued art studies at the League. At this time he made a number of etchings with the most popular being "The Return to the Fold," "Evening," and "Pasture Lands." These works were etched from his own paintings and he also etched works for other artists who were not familiar with the etching process. In 1889 he married Johanna Strebel of Jersey City and 2 children were born to that union: Mabel H and Oscar Hunt vonGottschalck, Jr. Oscar von Gottschalck wrote a number of books, including the children's book "Lives of the Haunted" published 1902 by R.H. Russell of New York. A copy of this book was recently listed for sale on an internet site. He was listed in "Who's Who in America" Volume 6, 1883. Some exhibitions of Oscar Hunt Von Gottschalk's tone paintings include Salmagundi Club, New York, February 1906 and March 1907, Chicago in November 1906 and September 1907, Berlin 1908. His work was also exhibited with Marshall Field & Company with prices starting at $100+ per painting at the time.
