Item Details
Description
Ca. 1050-750 BC. A pottery lekythos with an elongated body with a bulbous lower part, gradually tapering to its opening. This particular vessel also features a small loop handle to the side and is decorated with horizontally oriented bands of various thicknesses. Lekythos, derived from the Greek word "lekythion," which means "oil vessel," is a type of ancient Greek pottery used primarily for storing oil or perfume. The narrow opening of the vessel, coupled with its elongated form, was designed to facilitate easy pouring of the contents. As a vessel used for storing valuable oils and perfumes, the lekythos played an important role in ancient Greek society, particularly in funerary rituals. Lekythoi were often included in funerary offerings to the deceased and were also used to anoint and adorn graves. Additionally, lekythoi were sometimes given as prizes in athletic competitions, further underscoring their cultural significance.Size: L:90mm / W:45mm ; 49.48gProvenance: Property of a central London Art gallery, formerly acquired on the US Art market.
