ISLAMIC OPENWORK WALL LANTERN
Item Details
Description
Ca. 17th-19th century AD. An openwork wall lantern formed in the round with a domed top and a rounded bottom adorned with a decorative finial. The mid-section body of the lantern is ingeniously constructed of four joined panels, each with an arch cut out, creating a mesmerizing pattern of light and shadow when illuminated. Similar wall lanterns of this style were traditionally used in mosques and other Islamic religious buildings as a source of light and spiritual inspiration. These lanterns not only served the practical function of illuminating the space but also created an ambiance of reverence and awe. The intricate openwork designs allowed for light to filter through, casting delicate patterns of light and shadow on the surrounding walls, a reminder of the divine presence.Size: L:555mm / W:360mm ; 5.76kgProvenance: From the collection of a London gentleman; formerly in a collection of A. Kotlar, since the 1970s.
