Ancient Near East / Western Asia, Persia (Iran), Islamic Period, ca. 9th to 12th century CE. A wonderful pottery lantern for an oil lamp featuring an openwork triangular motif and enveloped in creamy white slip. Wheel-made, the lantern displays a planar base and a domed body surmounted by an arched handle. The opening at the front would have allowed for the insertion of a lamp, making it easier to carry, while the openwork design above would have cast pleasing shadows when the lamp was lit. Size: 4.9" Diameter x 6.9" H (12.4 cm x 17.5 cm)

Professionally repaired with restoration to handle, top area, and over break lines. A few break lines just barely discernable in areas. Chipping to openwork pattern and expected surface wear throughout. Otherwise, very nice with great remaining slip. Old collection label on base.
