With 17 wood-engraved plates including frontispieces, most folding, plus 6 folding maps, title pages in red and black, publisher‘s devices, head and tailpieces, and floriated initials. 15x9.3 cm (6x3¾”), period full calf, raised bands, spines tooled in gilt; all edges stained red or speckled.

First two volumes in series recounting the Spanish conquest of what later became known as the Philippines. Ex-libris with institutional sticker, bookplate and ink stamp on title page in volume one, ink signature on front pastedown in volume two.

Wear and soiling to calf, joints cracked or tender, minor chipping; lower third of vol. 1 title page lost, some stub tears to plates and maps, occasional foxing and soiling throughout; very good.
