circa 1740, unmarked (possibly Meissen); the hinged lid decorated with molded and painted portraits of Frederick the Great and Elisabeth Christine in profile 2 1/4 x 5 3/4 x 4 in. (5.7 x 14.6 x 10.2 cm.) Provenance: Property from the personal collection of Edwin A. Hardy, Sotheby's European Works of Art Department and head of Asian Works of Art Department from 1972-1976
Condition
Only Frederick II, King of Prussia, could have ordered commemorative Meissen porcelain boxes with raised profile portraits of both him and his wife, intended as personal gifts to his friends at the time of his 1740 coronation. These commemorative boxes with the king and queen’s profiles were not available as souvenirs to others.
