Description
Starting in 1938, the Newsreel Theatre company provided newsreels to theaters all over the country. In the NYC area there were specific theaters (including one by Rockefeller Center) that specialized in Newsreels. This sign is from that company possibly from one of those theaters or maybe even from the main offices. Fantastic imagery is telling of the time period with the stylized cameraman and the globe. The last three images are for information/reference and not included in the auction. They show the interior of one of these Newsreel Theatres and some designs for a theater. The below quote is from the President of Newsreel Theatres around 1940 in response to their newsreels showing German information and footage prior to WWII.“French Githens, president of the Newsreel Theatres chain, was emphatic about the policy of his theaters: We will show without fear or favor news which comes to us from any recognized American producer, no matter how controversial the subject matter may be. We show all the news impartially, take no sides and play no favorites. In short, our embassy newsreel theatres are the public forums of the screen.”Dimensions Approx 16” x 14”
