Description
Robert Adams was an American photographer who was born on May 8, 1937, in Orange, New Jersey, and passed away on April 5, 2020, in Astoria, Oregon. He is best known for his black and white photographs of the American West, particularly of the landscapes and urban developments of Colorado, California, and Oregon. Adams studied English literature and then worked as a college professor before turning to photography in the 1960s. His early work was heavily influenced by the New Topographics movement, which rejected the romanticized view of nature and instead focused on the impact of human development on the landscape. Adams' photographs often depict the tension between nature and human intervention, and he has been praised for his ability to find beauty in the seemingly mundane and banal. His work has been exhibited widely and is held in the collections of numerous museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
