Item Details
Description
Mark Rothko was an American painter of Russian-Jewish descent, born on September 25, 1903, in Dvinsk (now Daugavpils), Latvia. He is best known for his abstract expressionist paintings, which feature large fields of color and are often characterized by their meditative and spiritual qualities. Rothko immigrated to the United States with his family in 1913 and settled in Portland, Oregon. He studied painting at Yale University and the Art Students League in New York City. He was deeply influenced by European modernism, especially the work of the Fauvists, Surrealists, and Expressionists. In the 1940s, Rothko began to develop his signature style of painting, which consisted of large, rectangular canvases with bands of color stacked on top of each other. These paintings were designed to evoke a sense of transcendence and were often described as "spiritual" or "mystical." Rothko's work was highly influential in the development of abstract expressionism and has been exhibited in major museums around the world. He committed suicide in 1970 at the age of 66.
