Anton Pearson (1892-1967) plaster plaque, "Smoky Valley People", unsigned plaster cast, good condition with a few small chips expected of age. 8.75x10.5x1 inches. Born Lund, Sweden, May 23,1892; died Lindsborg, Mar. 1967. Sculptor, specialized in wood & stone. Studied at Technical School in Lund, Sweden. Coming to the U.S. in 1912, he traveled with horse and wagon through seven states, floated down the Mississippi in a houseboat and hiked through Arkansas and Missouri.En route to the San Francisco Exposition, he stopped in Lindsborg, met Birger Sandzen and stayed there to study painting, earning a BFA from Bethany College. Established a studio in Lindsborg and continued to do carvings from whatever wood was available. His subjects were often people he knew or groups of people in familiar settings.
