Papier Mache lacquered box commemorating Voltaire's corps return to Paris 1791 with celluloid figures The scene under glass bubble window depicts a decorated horse and carriage surrounded by a crowd of men and women made of carved and applied celluloid. The hand-painted inscription reads Translation de Voltaire le 11, Juillet, 1791. From Wikipedia: On 11 July 1791, the National Assembly of France, regarding Voltaire as a forerunner of the French Revolution, had his remains brought back to Paris and enshrined in the Panthéon. An estimated million people attended the procession, which stretched throughout Paris. There was an elaborate ceremony, including music composed for the event by André Grétry 1"H x 3 1/4"Diam.
