Paul Winthrop Wood (1922-2003) was an American painter known for his depictions of the landscapes and cityscapes of New York City. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts and studied at the Boston Museum School and the Art Students League of New York. Wood's paintings often featured the architecture and urban landscapes of New York City, as well as the surrounding natural environment. He was particularly drawn to the industrial and commercial structures of the city, and his paintings often featured the elevated train tracks, bridges, and factories that dominated the skyline. Wood's style was characterized by his use of bold, vibrant colors and his thick, gestural brushwork. He was heavily influenced by the Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1950s, and his work often blended elements of abstraction and representation. In addition to his painting, Wood was also a respected teacher and arts administrator. He taught at the Art Students League of New York and served as the director of the Silvermine Guild Art Center in New Canaan, Connecticut. Wood's artwork was exhibited widely during his lifetime, and he was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a Fulbright Scholarship in 1962. Today, his paintings can be found in the collections of museums and galleries around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
