(Associate National Academy) Measures 22 inches high, 20 inches wide. Frame measures 30 inches high, 27.7 inches wide. In good condition. Old reline and a thumbprint size touch up in the sky.
Arthur James Emery Powell (1864-1956) was an American artist known for his landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. He was born on August 22, 1864, in Malden, Massachusetts. Powell studied at the Massachusetts Normal Art School and later at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he was a student of the famous French painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau. He also studied with the American painter Dennis Bunker, who had a strong influence on Powell's art. Powell worked as a portrait painter and exhibited his work in major exhibitions, including the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Corcoran Gallery. He was also a member of several art organizations, including the National Arts Club and the Salmagundi Club. Powell was known for his sensitive and nuanced portraits, which captured the personalities and inner lives of his subjects. He also painted still lifes and landscapes, which he approached with a similar attention to detail and psychological depth. In addition to his painting, Powell was also a teacher and lecturer. He taught at the Art Students League of New York and the Cooper Union, and he was a popular speaker on art and art history. Powell died on September 1, 1956, in New York City, at the age of 92. His work is held in numerous collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
