Nicolai Cikovsky was a Russian-born American artist who worked as a painter and art educator. He was born on November 26, 1894, in Smolensk, Russia, and immigrated to the United States in 1912. He studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York City, and later at the Académie Julian in Paris. Cikovsky's work is often associated with the American Scene movement, which celebrated Femmarealistic depictions of everyday life in America. He painted landscapes, portraits, and still lifes, and his work is characterized by its naturalistic style and careful attention to detail. He was particularly interested in the landscapes of New England, and his paintings often depict the region's rugged terrain, dramatic skies, and changing seasons. In addition to his work as a painter, Cikovsky was also an influential art educator. He taught at several institutions throughout his career, including the Art Students League, the National Academy of Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He was known for his rigorous teaching style and for his commitment to preserving traditional techniques and styles of painting. Cikovsky received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the National Academy of Design's Ranger Fund Purchase Award and the Childe Hassam Fund Purchase Award. His work is held in the collections of many major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Nicolai Cikovsky died on March 3, 1984, in Washington, D.C.
