Jon Zahourek (American, b. 1940). Watercolor, 1974. Hand signed and dated in pencil at upper left. A striking watercolor by Jon Zahourek depicting a reclining nude woman with her left arm raised above her head in an elegant manner. The sitter turns her head slightly and lowers her eyelids as if daydreaming or about to nap. All is delineated in vibrant shades of sun-kissed orange, peach, and petal pink - a color palette that sharply contrasts with the white watercolor paper. Zahourek's passion for anatomy as well as his artistic process is palpable in this seductive composition which brings to mind art history's famous nudes - i.e. Ingre's "Grande Odalisque" or Titian's "Venus of Urbino" - with their similar languid poses. Size (watercolor): 21.875" L x 29.875" W (55.6 cm x 75.9 cm) Size (frame): 31.375" L x 39.375" W (79.7 cm x 100 cm)
In the 1960s, Jon Zahourek dropped out of college to become an artist. By way of Taos, New Mexico and later Denver, Colorado Zahourek was part of a thriving community of artists, exhibiting his work with prominent contemporaries including Ned Jacobs, Buffalo Kaplinski, George Carlson, and Fritz White. In the 1970s, Zahourek moved to New York to teach painting. He continued as an artist and educator, and eventually fueled his passion for anatomy into developing a system for teaching anatomy which has been used by more than 6,000 classrooms across the United States.
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
