Scene in 5 sections. This is a Zuber Scenic wallpaper, handblocked in color. The designer was Pierre Mongin. This paper is very rare - as is any Scenic wallpaper on joined sheets dating from pre-1845. It was a popular scenic, originally produced in 1818 and subsequently re-issued many times. Papers in color require more wood blocks than grissailles and are therefore more valuable. The promotional brochure dated 1818 and entitled Paysage tableau en Papier Peint states: “The landscape, representing several of the most notable sites and monuments in Italy, as well as scenes taken from the habits and customs of the peoples who today inhabit the various provinces of this lovely country, ought to arouse even greater interest, since all the views and costumes are taken from nature and the execution, as well as the style, of this composition is, in every way, worthy of representing memories of this classical land.” [Approx 75 high inches x approx 128 total width inches].
