Item Details
Description
A copper kettle of Stokes Family interest Likely Philadelphia or Southeastern Pennsylvania, early 19th century

Oval form, the lid with brass knob, the underside of handle with impressed numeral, "6," the body engraved, "John H. Stokes M.D. 1765-1817/ John H. Stokes M.D. 1808-1873/ Anne Jenkins Stokes 1844-1903/ John Spencer Stokes 1884."

(H: 11 3/4 in. W: 13 1/2 in. D: 7 1/4 in. (when handle raised))

Provenance

The assumed line of descent: John Hinchman Stokes, MD, and Ann Evans Stokes, thence to their son John Hinchman Stokes, MD (1808-1873) and Tabitha (Jenkins) Stokes (1815-1884), thence to their daughter Anne Jenkins Stokes (1844-1903), thence to Anne's brother John Spencer Stokes, MD (1842-1868), although the engraved date "1884" falls outside his life dates. It may refer to the death date of their mother.
Presumably passed down through the family to the present consignor.
