Note
The pattern is associated with Benjamin Chew Wilcocks (1776-1845) of Philadelphia. Wilcocks is credited with playing a vital role in expanding trade-including the opium trade- between China and the United States. He served as a commission agent and merchant in Canton, as well as the United States consul at Canton (1813-1822), from about 1812 to 1827. Of unusually tall stature, Wilcocks was nicknamed the "The High Devil" by the Chinese.
For more information on the pattern, see Jean Gordon Lee, Philadelphians and The China Trade, 1784-1844 (1984), pp. 44-52, illus. 5. p 49.
