South Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE; North America, western United States, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A pair of forged iron horse bits of different forms. First is an American "mullen mouth" horse bit with a straight tongue bar, rein rollers, and hinged "butterfly lugging" cheek pieces with an ornate openwork design. The Indian horse bit is of a "single joint" design with both lateral bars joined in the middle as well as 4 spiraling strap rings. Both horse bit types were utilized as a means for a rider to gently guide a horse when riding. Size of largest (mullen mouth): 10.7" L x 4.1" W (27.2 cm x 10.4 cm)
Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in the 1960's

Condition
Both pieces have light abrasions and oxidation, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina throughout. Hinges still articulate smoothly.
