Brigadier General Edmund Rice (1842 - 1906) - a Congressional Medal of Honor for "Gallantry at Gettysburg, PA., July 3, 1863"The five-rayed star (army, second model) embossed in bronze, standing on one point, with engraver's signature "Paquet F.". The eagle clasp fastened with rings and the suspension bar with safety pin, both also embossed in bronze. On the original ribbon. Dedication "The Congress to Major Edmund Rice 18th Mass.Inf., for Gallantry at Gettysburg, PA., July 3, 1863" on the reverse. Width 53.3 mm.Edmund Rice joined the 14th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment in 1861 and shortly thereafter was transferred to the 18th Mass.Inf.Rgt. During the Civil War, he took part, among others, in the battles "Ball's Bluff", "Siege of Yorktown", "Fair Oaks, "Savage Station" and "Malvern Hill", was promoted to the rank of major in 1862 and in December 1862 participated in the "Battle of Fredericksburg". For his bravery shown in fighting off the frontal assault of the Confederate troops known as "Pickett's Charge" in the "Battle of Gettysburg" from 1st to 3rd July 1863, he received the Congressional Medal of Honor, which, however, was not awarded to him until 1891. In 1864, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel, in May 1864 he was wounded and was taken prisoner of war during the "Battle of Spotsylvania Court House", but managed to escape by jumping off a train and in July 1864 was made colonel. Rice also fought in the Indian Wars, in the Spanish-American War and in the Philippine-American War. In 1903, he resigned in the rank of a brigadier general.Condition: II +
