BIOGRAPHY:
Lucille D. Bainbridge (1924-2007) began painting after her father gave her a set of oil paints and a portable easel when she was eighteen. Her interest in art steadily increased and after a year of fashion illustration courses, she quit her job and became a full-time day student at the School of Practical Arts in Boston. Her first oil painting was of an old apple tree in the back yard of the family home. Her first exhibition was in Madison, CT. In 1954 the family moved to Golden, Colorado. In 1960 they moved to Winthrop, Washington where Lu began to paint almost full time. She began selling pastel sketches and oil paintings and also did work for commercial clients. She began to refine her technique of finely detailed paintings on gesso coated masonite. Some of her first exceptional paintings were done during this period, including the Methow Valley and Liberty Bell Peak. A move to Sacramento in 1963 enabled her to have her first dedicated studio. She began painting several hours a day. She continued with exhibits and increased sales at two galleries in Sacramento. The family then moved to Corvallis, Oregon. Many car camping and backpacking trips along the coast, dry southwestern canyons along the Illinois River, and the Wallowa mountains of eastern Oregon provided further inspiration for her painting. Her growing talent can be see in the painting Sunset at the Refuge. Her work was displayed and sold well at the Corvallis Arts Center. Her work was also honored in 2012 in a retrospective of their collection. In 1973 she retired to a small ranch in Cortez, Colorado. She enjoyed the quiet and simple beauty of mountains, mesas and canyon lands. These provided the inspiration for many of her paintings from this period. She exhibited and sold her paintings at a gallery in Cortez. In July 1979 her work was featured in Southwest Art.
