Description
Featured in this lot is an original 1950s Butte Special Beer cone top can from Butte, Montana. The can shows wonderful graphics and reads "Butte Special Beer / Butte Brewing Company / Butte, Montana". A group of local businesspeople in Butte, Montana, established the Butte Brewing Company in 1890. The brewery immediately rose to prominence as one of the most prosperous in the area, and by the turn of the century, it was turning out more than 100,000 barrels of beer annually. Like many other breweries, the Butte Brewing Company was forced to close its doors during Prohibition. The company was able to thrive by making near-beer and soft drinks, unlike many of its competitors. In 1933, when Prohibition was ended, the firm started making beer once more. The Butte Brewing Company remained one of Montana's most well-liked breweries during the 1940s and 1950s. In addition to "Butte Special," a lager, and "Pioneer," a dark beer, the firm manufactured a variety of other beers. Yet by the 1960s, the company was up against more and more competition from bigger breweries, and sales started to fall. The Carling Brewing Company, a bigger Ohio-based brewery, purchased the Butte Brewing Company in 1965. For several years, the Butte Brewing Company produced beer when it was owned by Carling, but by the late 1970s, it was no longer profitable, and in 1979, the brewery was permanently shut down. The can shows a red, white and gold color scheme with "Butte Special Beer" in red, black and gold lettering. The bottom of the can reads, "Brewed And Filled By Butte Brewing Company Butte, Montana" in small black lettering. The can shows good condition. It measures 2 5/8" diameter and 5 1/2" height.
