Item Details
Description
DESCRIPTION: Attributed to Martin Altomonte (1657-1745) Monumental oil on canvas painting depicting Susanna in drapped garb at the bath, being ambushed by two older men clutching jewels within a garden courtyard backdrop. Nameplate attached to frame: "Martin Altomonte 1657-1745 Umkreis, Susanne U.Dire Beiden Alten Im Schlosspark" mounted in ebonized wood frame. Shipping label at stretcher: "Shipped by E.D.E.T. International, Made In France"

Notes: "The painting illustrates the story of Susanna recorded in the Bible in the book of Daniel (chapter 13, verses 1-64). Susanna is sexually harassed by two old men while she is bathing. She defends herself loudly and is then accused of adultery by the two old men, for which she faces the death penalty. A court case ensues, in the course of which the prophet Daniel interrogates the two elderly separately. The statements contradict each other, they cannot consistently state under which tree the adultery is said to have taken place. As a result, the two old men are found guilty of false testimony and killed.
The painting shows the moment when the two old people ambush Susanna in the bath.
