"Francis Bruguière (1879-1945)...was born in 1879 in San Francisco. He grew up in a wealthy family and attended school on the East Coast, where he studied music, poetry, painting, and photography. Bruguière was originally a painter, but photography became his priority after he met Frank Eugene and Alfred Stieglitz in New York in 1905. Financial reversals followed the 1906 San Francisco earthquake compelled him to turn professional. After cochairing the photographic exhibit selection for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, Bruguière moved to New York. Today he is best known for his abstract photographs dating from the 1920s. He died of pneumonia in 1945" -Pictorialism in California, p. 141.
