Item Details
Description
Third Intermediate Period, ca. 1069-702 BC. A glazed composition wedjat amulet depicted with a black brow, and pupil creating a stark contrast with the bright blue glaze of the amulet. The wedjat eye was a symbol of protection, health, and power in Ancient Egypt. It was associated with the god Horus, who was believed to have lost his eye in a battle with the god Seth, only to have it restored by the goddess Hathor. The eye thus became a symbol of rebirth and regeneration and was often used in funerary contexts to ensure the safe passage of the deceased into the afterlife. The eye was also believed to have healing properties and was used in medicine and magical rituals to cure ailments and ward off evil. A similar example can be found in Andrews' "Amulets of Ancient Egypt" (pl. 46b). Size: L:29.6mm / W:23.7mm ; 5.12g Provenance: From the collection of a London gentleman; formerly acquired in early 2000s; previously in 1970s UK collection.
