Vintage Wire Chicken Handled Basket For Holding Eggs and Collecting Eggs
A lovely chicken shaped basket with two movable handles in the shape of wings that was used to hold eggs. Made of cut and wrapped wire, this large hen even has wings that fold and cover the opening. This was used decades ago as a egg collection basket used to collect a few eggs from the hen house. I believe it dates from the 1930 to 1940's. This basket will hold two dozen plus eggs comfortably. This wire hen basket comes with 11 wooden and plastic eggs.
This chicken shaped basket measures about 9 inches tall and about 13 inches long, its round hole opening is 5-1/8" x 4-1/2".
Good vintage used condition. Wire has some patina, and no breaks. Some of the small thin gauge wire that was used to weave and stabilize the thicker gauge wire has developed rust. The thicker wire has developed small area of rust. The handles are not bent, see images. I put a magnet on the thicker wire and this is coated galvanized steel wire. Galvanizing process of coating steel by dipping it in molten zinc was patented in 1836, I did not know that, had to pass info on.
